Department of Security and Safety

About the Department

Instruction in the specialities forming the professional field of National Security commenced in September 2005 by Resolution of the Academic Council of Varna Free University. Instruction in all specialities is delivered at the Department of Security and Safety at the Faculty of Law.

The speciality of National Security Protection was established at VFU back in 1995, and was initially named "National and Corporate Security". In 1997, the speciality was named "National Security Protection" in accordance with the State Register of Classified Academic Degrees at Republic of Bulgaria’s Higher Education Schools in the Professional Field of State Studies and Law. With the establishment of the speciality, VFU became the first private school in Bulgaria providing instruction in the field of security.

The speciality was officially accredited in 2002 by Resolution of the Accreditation Council of the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (NEAA Record No.22 dated 27 June 2002). On 2 July 2008, the speciality was reaccredited by NEAA as a part of Professional Field 9.1., National Security, deserving the highest of all marks, "Very Good" for a six-year period until 2014.

The speciality of Crime Prevention and Public Order Protection was established in 1997 by the Council of Ministers, on the proposal of Chernorizets Hrabar Free University of Varna.

The speciality of Crime Prevention and Public Order Protection was accredited in 2002 by Resolution of NEAA (Record 13 of 18 April 2002). On 2 July 2008, the speciality was reaccredited by NEAA as a part of Professional Field 9.1., National Security, deserving the highest of all marks, "Very Good" for a six-year period until 2014.

BA Degree:

 

National Security Protection

The speciality of National Security Protection is designed to provide graduates the chance to embark on a professional career in the sphere of public security, or at any state, municipal or private organisation. Students are given the opportunity to choose between the following three subspecialties: National Security, Corporate Security and Disaster and Emergency Protection. The process of instruction is aimed at instilling knowledge and teaching practical skills enabling students to duly detect and assess any dangers and threats to national, corporate and personal security, to make well-reasoned risk decisions, organise and manage forces and resources to provide protection in a way that would prevent the occurrence of unwanted events, such as crimes, emergencies and disasters, neutralising the consequences of such events, and to prepare the conditions to establish causes and detect criminals. The professional qualification thus acquired enables graduates to embark on a successful career at Interior Ministry, Justice Ministry, municipal public order and security bodies, banks, insurance companies and any other businesses.

 

Crime Prevention and Public Order Protection

Crime Prevention and Public Order Protection is the only speciality taught at any Bulgarian private higher education institution, instructing specialists for service at crime prevention, correctional and educational institutions, with qualification for work with tort feasers and resocialisation of persons with deviant and criminal behaviour, as well as at any human rights and law enforcement organisation, probation institution, etc., embarking on a career as a social worker, conflict solution intermediation specialist (mediators), etc. During the time of their studies, students attend placements at different Interior Ministry offices, prisons, social, pedagogical and correctional institutions, such as boarding schools and juvenile delinquency commissions. The subspecialty of Forensic Science provides students broader access to forensic disciplines with regard to them being trained as experts and technical assistants in pretrial proceedings, or advisers at state and private organisations, etc. Work placements give students a combined set of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Projects

A list of the projects implemented by the Department of Security and Safety in cooperation with the EU:

  1. "Training of Instructors with Regard to Preparing the Residents of the Rhodope Cross-Border Areas for Action in Case of Forest Fire" is a project aimed at attracting and instructing individuals for preparing citizens for action in case of disasters and emergencies, based on the already-established voluntary organizations across the region. The project is implemented by the Regional Fire and Civil Protection Service of Smolyan, the Regional Administration of Smolyan, and different state and municipal schools from across the region.
  2. "Risk Mapping of Natural Disasters Triggering Mudslides and Causing Contamination of Internal Waters in the Region of Bulgaria’s and Romania’s Black Sea Coasts" is a project aimed at diagnosing the condition of the adjacent coastline on the territory of Northeast Bulgaria and Southeast Romania by means of collecting information and surveying the danger of possible landslides and water pollution along Bulgaria’s and Romania’s coastlines. The project is based on partnership between Chernorizets Hrabar Free University of Varna, Varna Naval Academy, Varna Maritime Administration, the Dutch company of Miramar, and Amsterdam Open University.
