A new look at social entrepreneurship

23 February 2015

Master class „Social Entrepreneurship“ starts on 24th February (Tuesday) at 10 am, at the Educational and Sports Centre of Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar”. The forum is organised by the university’s Academy Knowledge and Innovation, and is part of the project “Innovative Model for Knowledge and Innovation Transfer between Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” and Coventry University”. Lecturers will be Dr. Soizic Tsin and Louis Fidler (Coventry University Enterprises Ltd.), Magdalena Georgieva (SAP, Bulgaria), Galin Zhelyazkov (Director of 158 Ltd.) and Dima Ilieva (First Online Solutions). Among the registered participants are students of Varna Free University and representatives of various institutions and NGOs. An invitation to participate has also been sent to the team who developed Varna’s application for European youth capital in 2017. The focus of the application in the field of social innovation creates a broad base for partnership between Varna Free University and Varna Municipality in order to face the challenge of turning the city into a hub of social innovation and a link between the young people from the Black Sea region, the south-eastern and eastern Europe, the European youth capitals and the twin towns.

Social entrepreneurship is a different way of economic activity which combines the resourcefulness of the business with a social mission, and achieves a balance of social and economic goals. It includes activities aiming to find solutions to major social problems, at the same time generating revenues for the entrepreneur.

Social entrepreneurship is a balance between non-profit organisations and traditional business enterprises because it is self-supporting and generates profit on the one hand, and on the other, it can help to overcome social difficulties and problems related to the conservation and restoration of the environment.

The name “social entrepreneurs” has gained popularity in the last few years. Two of the emblematic names in this area are those of Henry Ford and Steve Jobs. Both of them had a non-conventional outlook on their professional area – automobiles and computers respectively – thus destroying the existing model in their industries and achieving dramatic growth in the output by starting waves of change.

Today, increasingly greater attention is paid to managerial and business skills which can be used to implement social change.

This master class provides a different look at the social entrepreneur as a transforming force.
