Students from Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” visit the main European institutions in Brussels, and attend lectures specially designed for them, on European funding for Bulgaria and on project development technologies

10 June 2015

Master students doing the project management programmes of Varna Free University once again had the opportunity to learn about the work of European institutions in a week’s course. From 31st May 2015 to 7th June 2015, the students attended a course, which was specially designed for them, in the newest building of the European Commission - Directorate-General Communication and the Careers with the EU Department.

The students’ interest was captured by the introduction of the Head of the Directorate-General Jürgen Wettig. The future challenges and the key changes in the EU’s cohesion policy for the programme period 2014 – 2020 were presented by Ms. Borislava Woodford from the Directorate-General Regional and Urban Policy, and Ms. Diana van Alten introduced the students to the internship programmes and the opportunities for specialization and career with the EU structures.

The students also learnt about the work of the European Parliament, and participated in a discussion about the Bulgarian presence there. They attended lectures on the possibilities for Bulgaria to attract funding under the EU’s structural funds, and joined a discussion about the work of the Council of the European Union related to the future changes in the governance of the Union. Lectures were also read for the Bulgarian students at the Committee of the Regions and at the Permanent Representation of Bulgaria. The students were awarded certificates for the course of training, presented by the Bulgarian MEP Emil Radev.

Varna Free University is the only Bulgarian university which, for 11 years in a row, has been organizing an internship in Brussels for students whose professional interests lie in project management.

This is what they say:

This internship is yet another opportunity which the university provides for us, so that we can develop as professionals.

Our participation in the plenary session and in the discussion about the governance of the EU, as well as the specially designed lectures, helped us enhance our knowledge and were a sign of respect to us and our university.

This incredible professional experience was accompanied by a tour of Belgium’s landmarks, and it made us feel like real citizens of the world.

We would like to express our deep gratitude to the President of Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” Prof. DSc Anna Nedyalkova for the opportunity we were given, and for her support in the endeavor to be part of the process of governance of the European Union.
