Address by President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Krasimir Nedyalkov at the Opening of the 2026/2027 Academic Year

29 September 2026
Dear members of the University management,
Dear colleagues, lecturers, and staff of Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar”,
Dear guests,
Dear students,

It is a great honor for me to welcome you to the opening ceremony of the new 2026/2027 academic year! This day is always special for us because it symbolizes the pursuit of knowledge, personal growth, and continuity from one generation to the next. I would compare it to the moment when a young swallow first ventures to the edge of its nest.
Today, we confidently embark on our 35th consecutive academic year. This will be a memorable year in the life of our university, as it brings together reflection on the years behind us with our responsibility to face the inevitable challenges of a new beginning with confidence and determination. Over the past 35 years, Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” has come a long way – from the bold vision of a handful of people who dreamed of creating a modern and independent higher education institution to becoming one of the pillars of higher education in Bulgaria and a respected academic centre in Europe and around the world.
The first reason for this is the growing trust in Varna Free University as an institution, reflected in the steady influx of more than 1,300 new first-year students.
Second, I would point to the profile and geographical diversity of our prospective students. They confirm that the choice of a university is increasingly driven by the practical value of the knowledge and skills acquired through education. Today, Varna Free University is firmly and consistently pursuing a high-tech development path and strengthening its position as an innovative institution. It is a modern educational and research centre focused on the development of key industries and sectors that will shape Bulgaria’s present and future.
Our many achievements give us a deep sense of satisfaction and pride because they are ultimately dedicated to the young people of Bulgaria. We are proud to know that, through our work, we are helping to strengthen the highly qualified human capital on which the nation’s future depends.
Dear students,
On your journey towards building your careers, you have chosen to place your trust in a university and degree programmes that have earned a strong reputation in European higher education and consistently rank highly in Bulgaria’s University Ranking System. This strong standing is reflected not only in our classrooms and research, but also in the environment we are creating to support you on your path to a successful career.
My wish for you today is that you will always carry with you the pride and responsibility of being students and graduates of a respected and distinguished university.
Dear first-year students,
New horizons are opening up before you. Let your curiosity about the world be your compass, your dreams your driving force, and let every step you take lead you towards growth, change, and personal development. The world is waiting for you to meet it prepared, confident, and determined to make your mark.
Dream boldly, but remember that dreams only work when we work for them, too.

Dear colleagues – lecturers and staff,
Your dedication and commitment to academic excellence are the foundation on which the reputation of Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” is built. At a time of rapid change and transformation in education, you keep the spirit of inspiration and the power of personal example alive. Thank you for the energy and strong sense of responsibility with which you prepare these young people to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s labour market with confidence and dignity.
I wish you good health, courage, and the satisfaction that comes from seeing the fruits of your professional and academic endeavours.
Dear business and local government partners,
The strong partnership between the university, business, and public institutions is key to the prosperity of the city of Varna and our country. Thank you for sharing our vision of modern, practice-oriented education. Your presence here is proof that, together, we are building a thriving ecosystem that helps keep young and talented people in Bulgaria.
I believe the new academic year will be a year of shared achievements, new horizons in research, and inspiring discoveries. May the patron of our university, Chernorizets Hrabar, remind us that words and knowledge are our most powerful tools and our highest values.
Keep learning. Keep seeking.
Step beyond the edge of the nest and take flight.
I wish you all a healthy, peaceful, and successful year!
