An Educational Forum Dedicated to Positive Education Was Held at Geo Milev Secondary School in Varna

A forum for sharing good practices was held at Geo Milev Secondary School Varna. The topic is 'Positive education in the context of socio-emotional learning and the continuity between primary and lower secondary school as a new educational paradigm'. The event was organized jointly with the Varna Regional Education Department and aims at sharing and systematizing pedagogical experience in building positive education in school. The forum was opened by the director of Geo Milev Secondary School - Dr. Martin Valchev.

Dr. Irena Radeva - head of the Regional Education Department in Varna, Antoaneta Hineva - director of the Directorate of Education and Youth Activities in Varna Municipality and Assoc. Prof. Eleonora Tankova from VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar", vice-rector of the university, and co-founder and head of the Center for Positive Education addressed the attending representatives from Varna schools with words of support, ideas for joint work and the perspective of positive education. Prof. Rumen Stamatov, a lecturer in the Psychology department and head of the Center for Positive Education, joined in online and shared that a programme for positive education in kindergartens and high school students is being developed.

The forum began with a presentation of programmes and practices in using the principles of positive psychology in the educational process at Geo Milev Secondary School. The school was the first in the country to launch a pilot project in the 2022/2023 academic year, under the management of Prof. Rumen Stamatov, to build positive education in school, whose goal is to create an environment that promotes personal development, emotional intelligence and academic success of each student.

The participants had the opportunity to learn about the implemented programmes and initiatives with a focus on social-emotional learning at Geo Milev Secondary School before 2022, when the joint initiative with VFU began using programmes based on the concept of well-being.

The school team, who want to support students in the transition from primary to junior high school also presented the new programme 'Developing Self-Control Skills in Fifth Grade'. The aim is to support students' personal growth by developing skills for self-knowledge and goal setting, which in turn will lead to higher efficiency in the school and social environment.

Materials, prepared by first-graders under the 'Positive Classroom' programme, which has been in operation at Geo Milev Secondary School for the first year, were arranged in the hall as an illustration of part of the work of the pedagogical team.

In the second part of the meeting, good practices on the topic were presented by Zahari Stoyanov Primary School, Dobri Chintulov Primary School, P.R. Slaveykov Primary School, and Naiden Gerov Secondary School. The event ended with a discussion on the topic: 'A Unified Concept and Specificity of Positive Models at School'.
