CHOREOGRAPHY STUDENTS FROM VARNA FREE UNIVERSITY "CHERNORIZETS HRABAR" FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE LIVING TRADITION IN DOBRUDZHA

29 May 2026

Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" organises the 4th Scientific Research Expedition "In the footsteps of the living tradition - dance, memory and identity in the Silistra region". Students and teachers will conduct field research in the villages of Alfatar, Kalipetrovo and Babuk, dedicated to the preservation and study of the Bulgarian dance and folklore heritage in the Dobrudzha region.

The expedition will document authentic dances, musical samples, local customs and living memories of bearers of the tradition. The collected materials will enrich the scientific archive of the university and contribute to the preservation of the intangible cultural heritage of the region.

The scientific guidance of the expedition is taken by Prof. Katya Kairyakova, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Ivaylo Ivanov, PhD and Senior Asst. Prof. Dilyan Galev, PhD. The organizer of the field research is the PhD student Velizar Vasilev.

The expedition is another manifestation of the commitment of Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" to the living Bulgarian tradition - the belief that academic knowledge is born not only in the classrooms, but also in the field, in a meeting with the people and communities who preserve the memory of their ancestors.
