EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION: DIALOGUE BETWEEN LANGUAGES AND TECHNOLOGIES AT VFU "CHERNORIZETS HRABAR"

The scientific and methodological seminar entitled Dialogue between Languages ​​and Technologies: Innovative Methodological Practices with Artificial Intelligence in Foreign Language Teaching brought together foreign language teachers and educational experts from 19 Bulgarian cities, representatives of over 20 universities, schools and educational institutions. The forum was held on 4 July 2026 and was organised by the Department of Foreign Language Teaching and Postgraduate Qualification of the Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar".

The forum brought together university lecturers, teachers from primary, secondary and vocational schools, directors of educational institutions and representatives of language centres. In addition to Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar", Sofia University "St Kliment Ohridski", Plovdiv University "Paisiy Hilendarski", Shumen University "Bishop Konstantin Preslavski", the University of Economics - Varna, the Medical Universities in Varna and Pleven, the Higher Naval School "N. Y. Vaptsarov", as well as a number of language and specialised schools, secondary schools and educational organizations from the country, including Secondary School of Mathematics "Dr Petar Beron" - Varna, Secondary School with Foreign Language Teaching "Ioan Exarch" - Varna, Secondary School with Language teaching "A. S. Pushkin" - Varna, Secondary School "Maxim Gorki" - Stara Zagora, Romance Languages ​​Secondary School "G. S. Rakovski" - Burgas, 127 Secondary School "Ivan Nikolaevich Denkoglu" - Sofia, 119. Secondary School - Sofia, 171. Primary School - Novi Iskar, The National School of Arts "Prof. Veselin Stoyanov" - Ruse, Secondary School "Vasil Levski” – Dulovo, Private Language Secondary School “Doris Tenedi” – Sofia, Vocational Secondary School of Transport and Mechanical Engineering – village of Gradnitsa and many others.

The national character of the forum is also evident in the wide geographical representation of the participants. The seminar was attended by teachers from Varna, Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas, Ruse, Shumen, Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo, Svishtov, Stara Zagora, Dobrich, Provadia, Silistra, Gabrovo, Nikopol, Samokov, Sevlievo, Dulovo and Novi Iskar, which turned the event into a national platform for professional exchange and sharing of good practices. The main goal of the seminar was to present modern approaches to integrating artificial intelligence into foreign language teaching and to encourage professional dialogue on the opportunities, challenges and ethical aspects of new technologies in education. The forum was held with the assistance of the Centre for Creative Learning and with the support of the Bulgarian National Network of Teachers of Russian Language and Culture and the Bulgarian Association for Quality Language Services Optima.

The programme offered practically oriented lectures and demonstrations by leading specialists in the field of digital education. Alexander Angelov, PhD from the Centre for Creative Learning presented the results of a national study on the implementation of artificial intelligence in Bulgarian secondary education and the capabilities of the Google AI platform for personalised learning. Sen. Asst. Prof. Evgeni Andreev, PhD from Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” demonstrated the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence through practical applications and effective prompts for foreign language teachers. Prof. Nadya Cherneva, PhD from Plovdiv University “Paisiy Hilendarski” presented the Lingua Transfer AI concept, and Prof. Ekaterina Sofronieva, PhD and Assoc. Prof. Hristina Beleva, PhD from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” showed innovative approaches to the use of artificial intelligence through children’s poetry in foreign language teaching. Of particular interest were the practical demonstrations of digital tools, models for creating effective prompts and specific methodological solutions that can be applied directly in teaching practice. During the discussions, the participants united around the understanding that artificial intelligence is becoming an important tool for modernising foreign language teaching when used purposefully, responsibly and in support of pedagogical goals.

The scientific and methodological seminar is yet another proof of the active role of the Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" as a national centre for professional development of foreign language teachers, exchange of good practices and implementation of innovative educational technologies. The forum continues the long-standing tradition of the Department of Foreign Language Teaching and Postgraduate Qualification to organise highly qualified trainings that combine scientific achievements with the practical needs of modern education.
