Larry the Glarus or when a study project catches public transport to the university
We present to you Larry the gull – he lives, travels, changes moods and tells urban stories. He was created in the discipline Character Design of the Graphic Design major at Varna Free University. Larry is the result of Nadezhda Hristova's precise observation, strong imagination and sense of humor. Nadezhda is a 4th year student who you have already met - she is the author of the design project for the packaging of the university candies, after winning a competition last year.
Under the management of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Diana Sotirova, the project for Larry the gull is being developed as a comprehensive concept for a character with an urban spirit and real application. Larry travels on Varna buses, wears a plate with their number, his clothing and emotion change according to the final destination. His favorite food is pizza by the slice - a classic for every Varna gull. He cannot stand travelling on the bus without a ticket. In one of his most interesting interpretations, Larry travels on line 409, with his final destination being Varna Free University - VFU.
Nadezhda does not stop at just building the image. She weaves the character into the design of a paper ticket, on plastic or in the electronic application. “The project is a combination of creativity, functional design and carefully considered identity of the character”, says Assoc. Prof. Dr. Diana Sotirova. The discipline Character Design has become a platform for developing student skills and creating ideas with the potential for life outside the classroom.
