NEW LIFE FOR BALCHIK AIRPORT WILL BE OFFERED BY STUDENTS FROM VFU "CHERNORIZETS HRABAR" AND ION MINCU UNIVERSITY IN BUCHAREST IN AN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

08 Април 2024

Over the weekend, the international competition for creative ideas "NEW LIFE FOR BALCHIK AIRPORT" was launched in Balchik. The event is organized with the assistance of the Faculty of Architecture of Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" and the Faculty of Urbanism at Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urban Planning, and with the support of Albena JSC.

Five international teams of students of urbanism, specializing in landscape design at the University of Architecture and Urban Planning in Bucharest and architecture students from the Faculty of Architecture at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" will take part in the competition. Their task is to make proposals for the revitalization and reactivation of the joint civilian/military airport in Balchik.

At the end of last week, the Romanian delegation visited Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" and a meeting was held between the representatives of the two partner universities, resulting in a bilateral cooperation agreement.

The visit was followed by a trip to Balchik Airport, where the students learned more about the history of the place and had the opportunity to explore the area configuration. Considering the current state of the airport, its revival is necessary for giving new life to the entire area. The intention is to transform the space into a vibrant, functional and efficiently organized place – a landmark for the community – while preserving both the civilian and military characteristics of the site.

The students met with Krasimir Stanev, CEO of Albena JSC, who welcomed them and gave important explanations of the principles of organisation of such airports. The students listened to the presentations of arch. Vladimir Popov and arch. Konstantin Zlatarov, who outlined various aspects of the historical development of Balchik and the airport complex.

Landscape architect Dr. Ivelina Radilova introduced the attendees to the green ecosystems of the area and its specific plant species. The urbanist Dr. Sorina Rusu presented various projects with a similar focus, developed by the students at Ion Mincu University and the steps for their realisation. At the end of the presentations, the students asked questions about various aspects of future project proposals.

On the last day of the meetings, the Romanian and Bulgarian students were divided into five teams of 3-4 students each and had the opportunity to discuss with the instructors the outlines of the first proposals for the airport in Balchik.
