The Varna Free University case study team continues its winning series. After a number of successful performances and second place prizes, the team, led by Captain Ivan Mihailov, a 5-year law student, and members Nalyan Hristova, Veselina Veleva and Elena Kostadinova, ranked first in the national case study competition in criminal law, held on 1st June, leaving the St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia team behind. The runners-up were the other Varna Free University team, led by Captain Gabriela Panayotova, and members Maya Halvadzhieva, Maria Jordanova and Vassiliki Siapera and one of the Sofia University teams, led by Captain Sava Kalchev. Third ranked a Sofia University team, led by Captain Tihomir Rachev.
The first national; case study competition in criminal law was hosted by Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar”. It was held under the auspices of the University President Prof. D.Sc. Anna Nedyalkova. Participants included three teams from Varna Free University and three teams from St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia.
The Varna Free University teams are also participants in the criminal law study circle, supervised by Judge Rositsa Toncheva of the Varna District Court.
The competition jury included: Chair Prof. Anton Girginov, PhD, a criminal law professor, a prosecutor at the Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria and the first Bulgarian international prosecutor, author of a number of books in the area of criminal law, Senior Asst. Ralitsa Ilkova, PhD, a criminal law lecturer at St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia and Assoc. Prof. Juliana Mateeva, PhD, Head of the Department of Legal Sciences at the Faculty of Law of Varna Free University and a criminal law lecturer.
In the first round of the competition, the teams competed over a case study dealing with fraud. Under the adopted regulations, two teams dropped out – one from both universities. The remaining four teams continued the fight in the second round over a case study dealing with a document crime.
The participants showed excellent preparation, behavior of real jurists, and demonstrated their skills in rhetoric before the jury and guests. This competition was initiated by the 5-year law student Elena Kostadinova, member of the VFU winning team.
