Recognising the risks of human trafficking, identifying victims and strengthening cooperation between institutions were the key topics of an awareness-raising event held on 23rd October 2026 at Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar”. The meeting with representatives of the National Anti-Trafficking Hotline was dedicated to EU Anti-Trafficking Day, observed annually on 18th October.
The event featured Nikolay Velichkov, Security Manager and training facilitator from the National Anti-Trafficking Hotline team, and Vanya Avramova, a psychologist with extensive professional experience in supporting victims of human trafficking.
The meeting focused on applying academic knowledge to real-life situations - from recognising the initial warning signs of human trafficking to understanding the subsequent actions taken by the relevant authorities and organisations providing assistance to victims. These topics are directly relevant to the education and professional preparation of future specialists in law, security and psychology.
The National Anti-Trafficking Hotline is operated by the Izvor na Nadezhda (Source of Hope) Foundation and works in close cooperation with the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings.
The event further strengthened the university's ongoing cooperation with experts in human trafficking prevention and counteraction. In March 2025, Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” also hosted a specialised training session dedicated to the identification of and assistance to victims of human trafficking.
