Students of VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" will work on a strategy for prevention and protection of the population from earthquakes in Provadia

04 June 2019

Students of Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" will work on developing a strategy for prevention and protection of the population from earthquakes in Provadia. Mentor of the workshop will be the world-renowned architect - Prof. Masut Ismailu, PhD of the University of Architecture in Venice, he himself said during his visit to the International Conference ArCivE'2019 - Architecture and Construction, which took place at the University.

Students of different majors will join together strength, knowledge, competences and skills.  In addition to the future architects and civil engineers, representatives of the major of National Security Protection, psychologists and sociologists will participate, Prof. Milena Kichekova, PhD said.

"The upcoming workshop is within the framework of the international project "Sustainable Convergence of Knowledge" headed by Prof. Ismailu, which covers all countries hit by earthquakes. Students from the University of Kharkiv, Ukraine show interest. So the event is international and interdisciplinary. We decided to conduct the workshop in 2 parts. In July, the theoretical part will take place at VFU, and the practical one is scheduled for the beginning of August in Provadia", revealed Assoc. Prof. Milena Kichekova, PhD, Head of the Department of Construction of Buildings and Structures at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar". The students who wish to participate can enroll at the Department of Construction of Buildings and Structures at VFU. This is a kind of invitation to all young people with an interest in construction and engineering, because it is currently the active candidate-student campaign.

"After the strong earthquake in Acquila, Italy, we are working hard to restore the city in all its aspects. Not just as a building reconstruction. To be successful we need psychology, sociology, architecture, urbanism and even politics. With all of these sciences, we are trying to get people back there. Through the upcoming workshop at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar", we try to convey our experience, to say that the earthquakes are part of nature itself and so the Earth breathes. We gather knowledge and information which we would like to reach the citizens. The prevention with knowledge of the Earth can allow us to technically overcome the dangers. To live with earthquakes and not to perish. Not only physically, but also deep inside us, we are convinced that it is possible," said Prof. Ismailu.

He added that earthquakes cannot yet be predicted, but science provides enough options to survive. "We will try to implement a sustainable model for people to get acquainted with. That is why I rely on the media and social networks. The Department of Construction of Buildings and Structures at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar” is the starting point. They give us everything they have at their disposal. We looked at the site. It has history of more than 7,500 years, but there are still problems with earthquakes. The local administration is ready to cooperate," added Prof. Ismailu.
