STUDENTS PRESENTED A CONCEPTUAL MODEL FOR SOCIALIZATION ON THE TERRITORY OF "VARNA NECROPOLIS I"

20 October 2020

Assoc. Prof. Zhechka Ilieva, PhD and students in the master's degree programme in  Preservation of Cultural Heritage at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" presented a conceptual model for socialization on the territory of "Varna Necropolis I", where the oldest processed gold in the world was discovered.

Conceptual model for socialization of "Varna Necropolis I", uniting the concepts developed by students in the master's degree programme in Preservation of Cultural Heritage at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" was presented in the presence of representatives of the Municipal Council - Varna. The meeting was held at the Regional History Museum on the initiative of the Deputy Mayor of Varna – Mr  Kosta Bazitov. The options for support of the activities in connection with the excavations of "Varna Necropolis I" were discussed.

"The Varna necropolis is unique! Everyone knows about it, but now no one can see the place where the oldest processed gold in the world was discovered. The merit of the students of Varna Free University is that they showed that this meadow can become a world tourist attraction," said Yani Yanev - Vice President of Varna Free University and Chairperson of the Association "Varna Necropolis I".

In five years, the field research can be completed and socialization can be started if funding is provided for this, commented Vladimir Slavchev, PhD from the Regional History Museum in Varna.

Yani Yanev honoured the student teams that participated in a workshop last September and developed the concepts for the socialization of the Necropolis. The young architects designed under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Arch. Krasimira Vacheva, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Arch. Zhechka Ilieva, PhD and Prof. Nora Lombardini from the University of Milan (POLIMI). The workshop was held under the project "Varna Initiatives for Preservation of the Heritage of Neolithic Civilization Varna" of the Association "Varna Necropolis I", funded by the Culture Fund of the Municipality of Varna and in partnership with the Regional History Museum in the city.

The concept "Puzzle" of the students in the master's degree programme in Preservation of Cultural Heritage of Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" was determined as the best of the three proposed ideas for socialization of Varna necropolis I. It presents archeology and history in like a game. The method is suitable for both children and adults who have fun and learn at the same time. The principle of the puzzle is represented by the museum building, through the sacred presentation of the Necropolis and the park area, even to the souvenirs that the guests assemble themselves. The other two teams presented the projects "Inspiration" and "Golden Garden". Then, the Varna Necropolis I Association decided to include ideas from the projects that took second and third place in the development of the model, as they complement and develop.
