Artists’ interpretations of the Cyrillic alphabet were presented by second-year Graphic Design students at Varna Free University during the exam in the subject Font and Typography.
The future designers developed their own versions of the Cyrillic letters in the style of Capitalis Monumentalis. The designs were based on the drawings of Prof. Vasil Yonchev from the book "The Font through the Ages" – one of the most significant works in the field of type art in Bulgaria.
The course assignment directed the students towards an in-depth study of the form, construction and aesthetics of the letters, which have preserved the spiritual and cultural memory of the Bulgarian people for centuries. The projects showed how tradition can be recreated through modern visual language and creative thinking.
The course is conducted by Assistant Professor Ani Dimitrova – an established Bulgarian type designer and lecturer at Varna Free University. She combines extensive professional experience with active creative and teaching activities.
The symbolism of this challenge is particularly strong during the year in which Varna Free University supported the initiative to
build a monument to the Holy Seven Saints in Varna. The work of St Cyril, St Methodius and their disciples continues to inspire new generations of artists, researchers and guardians of the Bulgarian alphabet. Based on the work of Assistant Professor Dimitrova, texts will be inscribed on the monument to the Holy Seven Saints, which the university will donate to Varna.
The presented projects impressed with a variety of solutions, precision and individual creative style. They show that the Bulgarian alphabet continues to inspire new artistic pursuits and to occupy a worthy place in the contemporary visual culture.
