The film Signs of Mr. Plum will be screened at Varna Free University

10 April 2026

On March 13th, 2026, at 1:30 p.m., the documentary film Signs of Mr. Plum (directed by Bartosz Mikolajczyk and Urszula Morga, 72 min., with Bulgarian subtitles) will be presented in the Aula Maxima of Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar". The event is realized with the assistance of the Polish Institute in Sofia.

The film is dedicated to Karol Sliwka (1932–2018) - the most famous Polish logo designer and one of the emblematic figures in European graphic design. A graduate of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Sliwka achieved his first major success in 1957, when he won a national cigarette design competition. Since the early 1960s, he has participated in a number of national and international competitions, and his talent and original style have brought him dozens of orders.

During his long career, Karol Sliwka created over 400 logos, as well as packaging design projects, postage stamps, book covers, posters and labels. His signs remain part of Poland's visual culture and continue to be present in the public space today. Among his awards is the gold medal at the Third Polish Poster Biennale in Katowice (1969).

The documentary presents both the designer's professional path and his personal story. The narrative is enriched with rare video footage that provides a glimpse into Sliwka's life and his happy marriage to an opera singer. The directors skillfully connect his work with the context of modern history, capturing the spirit of the 1960s and 1970s through a dynamic visual narrative.

The screening at Varna Free University is part of the initiatives aimed at introducing students to key figures and trends in graphic design and visual communication.

Admission is free.
