THE LIBRARY OF VFU "CHERNORIZETS HRABAR" WITH AN EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO THE SPREAD OF THE SLAVIC SCRIPT

11 May 2021

The University Library of VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" presents the exhibition "1135 from the beginning of the Spread of the Slavic script in Bulgaria by the Disciples of St Cyril and St Methodius - Clement, Gorazd, Nahum, Angelarius and Sava. It is on display in the reading room and can be visited from 11 May to 24 May 2021.

One of the most interesting exhibits in it are the phototype editions of the Bulgarian Revival newspapers – Nezavisimost  and Svoboda from 1873, Tsarigradski Vestnik from 1862, Den from 1876 and others. They show what the periodical looked like more than 150 years ago on 11 May. The exhibition also includes various scientific works and fiction dedicated to the work of Cyril and Methodius and their disciples.

In 2021, we celebrate 1135 from the beginning of the spread of the Slavic script in Bulgaria by the disciples of Cyril and Methodius - Saints Clement, Gorazd, Nahum, Angelarius and Sava. They came to Bulgaria at the end of the 9th century to continue the work of the Slavic first teachers. They brought light to people, pronounced the word of God in an understandable language, taught reading and writing. Two educational cultural centres were established - in Ohrid and Preslav. This marked the beginning of the spread of the Slavic script in medieval Bulgaria, says Snezhana Maddzharova - Director of the University Library.

It is not by chance that the Bulgarian universities bear the names of our great men of letters and enlighteners. We are proud that for 30 years now Varna Free University has borne the name and spirit of Chernorizets Hrabar - a zealous defender of the Slavic word. Among the books included in the exhibition is the work "On the Letters" by Chernorizets Hrabar - the oldest historical monument about the beginning of the Slavic script. The medieval clergyman and writer remains the most mysterious Bulgarian author, who passed on to future generations the wise legacy - to seek knowledge because without it there is no present, no future!

На 11 май – денят на Светите равноапостоли и просветители Кирил и Методий, своят професионален празник отбелязват и библиотекарите - хората, които служат на писменото слово, като го съхраняват и разпространяват с идеята то да пребъде.
