VARNA FREE UNIVERSITY INVITES YOU TO A SCIENTIFIC ADVENTURE AT THE SCIENCE FESTIVAL

22 October 2025

Varna Free University participates in the 4th Varna Science Festival, which will be held from 23 to 26 October at Delta Planet Mall. Students and teachers will show that knowledge is a true adventure by offering visitors exciting workshops, demonstrations and experiments. See who our science communicators are ►

3D modeling
Date and times: 23 October, 10:30 –11:30 and 12:00 –13:00
Hall: Ocean
Trainer: Tsvetan Mitev – graduate in architecture
The workshop introduces participants to the world of digital design through the SketchUp software. They will create their first models and discover the application of 3D technologies in architecture, game design and visual arts.

Tsvetan Mitev is a graduate of Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" with a degree in Architecture. He is now part of an architectural studio, where he participates in the development of various project concepts. As a student, he won prizes in national and international competitions related to design, innovation and spatial planning. In his professional work, he uses 3D modeling as the main tool for creating functional and impactful architectural solutions. He is proficient in Revit, SketchUp, Lumion and Twinmotion, with which he turns his ideas into real spaces.

Varna Spaghetti Engineering
Dates and times: 23 October 13:30 –14:30 and 15:00–16:00; 25 October 14:00–15:00 and 15:30–16:30
Hall: DNA
Trainers: Dorothea Nikolaeva and Ilyaz Ilyaz – architecture students
Participants will build sustainable structures from spaghetti and silicone, compete in an "engineering battle" and master the principles of the engineering process - from idea to implementation.

Dorothea Nikolaeva is among the future architects who combine a scientific approach with a creative view of space and the urban environment. She has been awarded prizes in national competitions in architecture and construction, including "Varna Spaghetti Engineering" - a competition of Varna Free University, in which she participated while still a student. She was the chairwoman of the university's Student Council and the vice-chairwoman of the National Representation of Student Councils.

Ilyaz Ilyaz is a student of architecture and the Secretary General of the Student Council of Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar”. He completed an Erasmus semester at the Polytechnic University of Milan (POLIMI) – one of the leading higher education institutions in architecture in Europe. Inspired by the combination of tradition and innovation, he creates designer concrete products and his own mini formwork systems.

Forensic Science
Date and times: 24 October 10:30–11:30 and 12:00–13:00
Hall: Ocean
Trainers: Prof. Yonko Kunchev, D.Sc. and Asst. Prof. Aleksandra Angelova
Participants will take on the role of forensic scientists who uncover traces and evidence at a crime scene. They will work with the mobile specialised forensic laboratory of Varna Free University and will learn basic techniques for analysing clues and fingerprints.

Prof. Yonko Kunchev, D.Sc. has many years of teaching and research experience in the field of forensic science. He is the author of a number of books and textbooks and is among the founders of modern academic training in forensic expertise in our country. Thanks to his efforts, modern forensic science laboratries have been created at Varna Free University. In 2020, he was awarded the Varna Award for his contribution to academic and practical education.
Alexandra Angelova is a lawyer and forensic expert with many years of experience at Varna Free University. She works in both the educational and practical fields. She is the author of publications dedicated to investigation, expert reports and electronic crimes.

Architects of the Future – Augmented Reality and Digital Doubles
Date and times: 24 October 13:30–14:30 and 15:00–16:00
Hall: Ocean
Trainers: Arch. Stefan Vlahov
The workshop presents the process of 3D scanning and creating digital doubles, as well as the application of augmented reality in architecture. Participants will be able to visualise and process real objects in a three-dimensional environment.

Arch. Stefan Vlahov is a young architect who graduated in Architecture from Varna Free University and a graduate of the University of Dortmund, Germany. He is involved in robotics, 3D printing and space architecture, and today he works on projects for digital doubles – virtual copies of real objects and sites. He himself has his own “double” – a twin brother, and dreams that one day everyone will be able to experience this feeling. In his free time, he snowboards and is a ski instructor because he believes that freedom and movement give rise to new ideas.

History of Embroidery
Dates and times: 24 October 10:30–11:30 and 12:00–13:00; 26 October 10:30–11:30 and 12:00–13:00
Hall: DNA
Trainer: Prof. Maria Kardzhieva, PhD
The workshop presents the symbols and signs in Bulgarian embroidery, their meaning and their connection with folk beliefs and rituals. Participants will learn to "read" the language of colours and shapes and will feel the connection between tradition and modernity.

Prof. Maria Kardzhieva, PhD teaches composition, directing, ethnography, history of Bulgarian choreography and art management at Varna Free University. She is among the first graduates of the specialty and has gone through all academic degrees - from assistant professor to professor. Her scientific interests are related to choreography, cultural memory, performing arts, and traditional codes in Bulgarian culture.

Computer Vision
