Among the total of the 850 universities from 70 countries, there are only 4 universities from Bulgaria included in the ranking of the European Commission - Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" , the Technical University of Sofia, the University of Ruse "Angel Kanchev" and the American University in Blagoevgrad. The universities are evaluated by many indicators, including Research, quality of teaching and learning, International orientation, Success in scientific exchange and are arranged in five groups of quality - from A ( very good ) to E ( poor ). According to these indicators Varna Free University has an excellent and two very good grades.
The site U-Multirank, created with the support of the European Commission aims to break the existing rankings that are heavily criticized for distortion of the aims and data. It allows students and other interested parties to assess the strengths and weaknesses of universities in different sections using the Internet tool. The study involved 60, 000 students.
This year the focus is on the majors in business, electrical engineering, engineering mechanics and physics. Psychology, computer science and medicine will be added in 2015. According to the Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, Androulla Vassiliou, the ranking “will enable students to make more informed decisions about where to study and give us a more accurate picture of how universities perform.”
