VFU “CHERNORIZETS HRABAR” WILL HAVE “UNIVERSITY” CANDY WITH STUDENT-MADE PACKAGING DESIGN

02 Април 2024

Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" announced a competition among the students from the second and third year of the Graphic Design major to develop candy packaging for the purposes of the university's application campaign. Within the framework of their lectures and labs in the Packaging design course, led by Prof. Dr. Savka Kazalarska, the students worked on the extremely difficult task to convey the messages of the university through packaging for a legendary brand of candies with over 100-year history.

Twenty-eight students participated in the competition, presenting more than 50 projects. After a long discussion, a jury consisting of Prof. Dr. Kapka Manasieva – Chair of the Department of Arts, Prof. Dr. Savka Kazalarska – lecturer in Packaging Design, Prof. Dr. Viktor Petkov – Lecturer in Graphic design, Nikolay Ivanov – Director of the University Publishing House and Miloslava Georgieva – Public relations expert, ranked the projects:

1. Nadezhda Hristova – third year, Graphic design major – 1st place
2. Petar Tsvetkov – second year, Graphic design major – 2nd place
3. Yoanna Hristova – third year, Graphic design major – 3rd place
The winner of the competition, Nadezhda Hristova, received an award of BGN 100 from the president of VFU “Chernorizets Hrabar” Prof. Dr. Krasimir Nedyalkov. The value of the award corresponds to the real price for the design of a candy wrapper. But most importantly, Nadia's creative idea will wrap more than 5,000 candies, which will become part of the student applications campaign of the Varna Free University, while the Nadia’s portfolio is enriched with a real packaging design project.

Nadezhda is a third-year student and work in industrial design after graduation. This is the first real project she is working on. She revealed that she got her inspiration from the taste qualities of the candy and the drive for development and professional growth that the university offers. "That's how the motto 'Sweet Choice' was born," shared Nadia.

Likewise, impressive are the ideas ranked second and third with working titles "University for All" by sophomore Petar Tsvetkov and "Modern Retro" by Yoanna Hristova from third year. Журито отличи високо професионално подготвените презентации на участници в конкурса, в които са описани графичните елементи, цветността и шрифта, и са представени продуктови макети.  The jury distinguished the professionally prepared presentations of the participants in the competition, which feature the graphic elements, color and font, as well as product models.

Working on a real task excited university students from various majors during the 10 competition days. They actively supported their colleagues from the Graphic design major with opinion, recommendations or candy tasting. The Student council of VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" has already submitted a request for part of the 28 kilogrammes of "student" candies designed by Nadezhda Hristova, which will arrive at the university within days.
