The second-year students of International Business at Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" - Emre Beyzat and Yasen Rusev took part in the simulation model of the Council of the European Union - Minister for a Day. The event, which took place in Sofia, was organised jointly with the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union and Sofia University "St Kliment Ohridski".
The simulation recreated a meeting of the EU Council of Ministers, in which the participants – students from different faculties of Sofia University, the University of National and World Economy and VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" – took on the role of ministers from EU member states. The main topic was the introduction of
a fair fashion label. The aim of this measure is to regulate the production and trade of textiles, reducing the exploitation of children and women in less developed countries and minimising the negative effects of the textile industry on the environment.
Emre Beyzat and Yasen Rusev represented Varna Free University worthily during the simulation. Emre Beyzat took on the role of a Minister of the Czech Republic, and Yasen Rusev took on the role of a Minister of Estonia. The states they represented supported the introduction of basic social standards and regulatory measures in the textile industry – a key topic of the discussions. In their role as ministers, the students had the opportunity to defend the interests of the respective member states and the global positioning of the EU in terms of social and environmental standards.
In addition to participating in the simulation, the students underwent training on the decision-making process in the EU and on the full participation of Bulgaria. The experience of the first Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU was also shared.
The event concluded with the Back to University initiative, during which students learned about internship and job opportunities in European institutions such as the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU, the European Commission, the European Parliament and others.
The bachelor’s degree programme in International Business, in which Emre and Yasen are studying, is taught in English. It is conducted jointly with BI Norwegian Business School and allows students to simultaneously receive two prestigious degrees from two leading universities.
