18 September 2019

Three student teams that will be working on creating socialization concepts for the Varna Necropolis in the coming days, in which the world's oldest processed gold was discovered, inspected the terrain today. In 1972, more than 3,000 gold objects were discovered in 294 graves dating back to the Copper Age. The finds are considered to be the oldest technologically processed gold in Europe and in the world, attributed to the so called Culture Varna (4400 - 4100 BC).

On Saturday – 21 September, at 9.00 am in the Odesos Hall of the Regional Museum of History in Varna, young architects from the master's degree programme in Preservation of Cultural Heritage of Varna Free University will present to the public their concepts for socialization of the site.

Mentor of the master’s students is the world-renowned cultural heritage expert and professor Nora Lombardini of the Italian University "Politecnico di Milano" (POLIMI), with which the Faculty of Architecture at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" works in partnership. The research works are guided by Arch. Elena Fioreto - PhD student at Politecnico di Milano. Today, they both took part in the field inspection.

The workshop participants also visited the Regional Museum of History to learn about artifacts, necropolis plans and historical information. In the coming days they will work on the creation of their concepts, under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Arch. Krasimira Vacheva, PhD and Arch. Zhechka Ilieva, PhD. Consultant is the archeologist from the Regional Museum of History – Varna, Vladimir Slavchev, PhD.

The workshop is held under the project Varna Initiatives for the Preservation of the Heritage of Neolithic Civilization Varna by the Varna Necropolis I Association, with the assistance of the Culture Fund of Varna Municipality and in partnership with the Regional History Museum in the city.
